Not every piece of jewellery you want to own already exists.

Sometimes you see something you like and want to change it. Sometimes you have an old family piece that you would like to redesign. Sometimes you have a particular gemstone and are looking for the right way to set it. And sometimes you simply have an idea in your head and need someone experienced enough to turn it into a piece that can actually be made and worn.

This is where our custom jewellery service begins.

At Janki, you can speak directly with Aniruddh “Andy” Fatehpuriya, a GIA Graduate Gemologist from New York, and discuss exactly what you have in mind. Andy has spent his life around gemstones and jewellery and has been involved in jewellery manufacturing from a very young age. Along with his experienced team at The Sterling Factory, he can take your idea through design, gemstone selection, manufacturing and finishing.

You do not need to have a finished design before you contact us. A photograph, a rough sketch, an old piece of jewellery or even a conversation about what you like can be enough to get started.

How It Works

1. Start With a Conversation

The first step is simply to tell us what you are looking for.

You can contact Andy directly on WhatsApp, send photographs and references, or arrange a private appointment. We will first understand what you are trying to create, who the piece is for, when you need it and what you have in mind.

If you already know exactly what you want, that is helpful. If you are still figuring it out, that is perfectly fine too.

A custom piece often develops through the conversation.

2. Send Us Your References

There is no particular format you need to follow.

You can send us photographs from your phone, screenshots from Instagram or Pinterest, pictures from a magazine, an old family photograph or photographs of jewellery you have seen elsewhere.

If you have your own design, you can draw it yourself and send us a photograph of the drawing.

It does not have to be a professional sketch.

Even a rough drawing can tell us something about the shape, proportions or details you have in mind.

You can also send several different references. Perhaps you like the setting from one piece, the shape of another and the gemstone arrangement from something else. Tell us what you like about each reference and our designers can work from there.

If you have nothing to send at all, simply describe what you are looking for.

3. Tell Us About the Person Who Will Wear It

Jewellery designed for you should make sense for you.

During the consultation, Andy will want to understand how the piece will be worn and what kind of jewellery you normally prefer.

For example, an engagement ring worn every day needs to be approached differently from a statement ring intended for occasional occasions. A necklace made for a wedding may have very different requirements from a pendant that will be worn every day.

We may ask about your usual style, the occasion, the type of clothing you wear, whether you prefer something subtle or more distinctive and whether there are particular designs or details you already know you like.

These details help the design become more personal and, just as importantly, more practical.

4. Tell Us Your Budget

We prefer to discuss the budget at the beginning rather than after the design has already been developed.

There is no particular budget you need to meet to work with us. Whether you are looking for a relatively simple piece or something much more elaborate, knowing the range you are comfortable with allows us to work sensibly within it.

The budget can influence the choice of metal, the size and quality of the gemstones or diamonds, the complexity of the design and the amount of hand craftsmanship involved.

It also gives us the opportunity to suggest alternatives.

Sometimes a small change in the design can make a meaningful difference to the price without changing the overall look of the piece. At other times, spending a little more on a particular gemstone or diamond can make much more difference to the finished jewellery than spending the same amount elsewhere.

Because Andy understands both gemstones and manufacturing, these are decisions we can discuss with you before anything is made.

The intention is to make the best piece possible within the budget you have chosen.

5. Decide on the Gemstones and Diamonds

If your jewellery includes gemstones or diamonds, we will discuss the options with you before finalising the design.

If you have a particular gemstone in mind, we can help you understand what to look for in that stone, including its colour, clarity, treatment, durability and, where relevant, laboratory documentation.

For diamonds, we can discuss the 4Cs, certification and the choice between natural and laboratory grown diamonds.

If you already own a gemstone or diamond, you can bring it to us or send photographs and any documentation you have.

We can discuss whether the stone is appropriate for the design you have in mind and what type of setting would work best.

6. Develop the Design

Once we understand the idea, our design team begins working on it.

Depending on the piece, this may involve hand sketches, detailed drawings or CAD modelling.

The purpose is not simply to make something that looks good on a screen. The design also needs to work as jewellery.

We need to consider the weight, proportions, stone placement, strength of the setting, comfort and how the piece will behave when it is actually worn.

This is particularly important with custom jewellery because something that looks beautiful in a photograph may not necessarily be practical to manufacture or comfortable to wear.

Our job is to make sure that the idea works in real life as well.

7. Review and Make Changes

You will have the opportunity to review the proposed design before we begin manufacturing.

This is where you can say that you want the band thinner, the stone larger, the setting lower, the design more detailed or perhaps simpler.

Sometimes the changes are very small. Sometimes they result in a completely different direction.

That is part of the process.

We would rather spend time refining the design at this stage than manufacture something that does not feel right to you.

Once the design is approved, we confirm the materials, gemstones, specifications, pricing and expected timeline.

8. Your Jewellery Is Made in Jaipur

Once everything is approved, the design moves into production with our team in Jaipur.

This is where the experience of our craftsmen becomes particularly important.

Depending on the design, the manufacturing process may involve casting, fabrication, stone setting, engraving, polishing and several stages of finishing.

Some pieces require more handwork than others. A simple ring and a highly detailed bridal necklace can have completely different manufacturing requirements.

Our team works through each stage carefully, with the approved design serving as the reference throughout production.

9. Setting and Finishing

Once the jewellery structure is ready, the gemstones and diamonds are set according to the design.

Stone setting requires precision because the stones need to sit securely while maintaining the intended appearance and proportions of the piece.

After setting, the jewellery is polished and finished.

The final appearance often comes down to details that are not immediately obvious in a photograph: the edges, the symmetry, the finishing of the metal, the way the stones sit and how the piece feels in the hand.

These are the details we pay attention to before the jewellery leaves our workshop.

10. Final Inspection

Before your piece is ready, it is inspected by our team.

We check the setting, finishing, gemstones and overall construction against the agreed design and specifications.

If the piece contains diamonds or gemstones for which certification has been requested, the relevant documentation can also be arranged as part of the process.

Once everything has been checked, your jewellery is prepared for delivery or collection.

Have a Gemstone Already?

You may not need to start with a new stone.

Perhaps you have inherited a gemstone from your family. Perhaps you purchased one years ago. Perhaps it was given to you by someone important to you.

Bring it to us.

We can look at the stone, discuss its characteristics and help you determine what type of jewellery would suit it.

If appropriate, we can also discuss whether it should be tested or certified before being incorporated into the finished piece.

A gemstone that has been sitting safely in a box for years can sometimes become the centre of a completely new piece of jewellery.

Have an Old Piece of Jewellery?

Family jewellery often has value that has nothing to do with its market price.

You may love the gemstone but not the original design. You may have inherited a necklace that is no longer your style. You may have an old ring that you would like to wear again but in a more contemporary form.

Depending on the condition and construction of the original piece, we can discuss whether the gemstones, metal or other elements can be incorporated into a new design.

The aim is not always to preserve the jewellery exactly as it was.

Sometimes the better way to preserve the memory is to give it a form that you will actually wear.

What Should You Send Us?

If you are contacting us for the first time, you can make the initial conversation easier by sending whatever information you already have.

A few photographs of jewellery you like are useful.

A photograph of the person who will wear the jewellery can sometimes help us understand their style.

A rough sketch is welcome.

Photographs of an existing piece are useful if you want something recreated or redesigned.

If you already own a gemstone or diamond, send photographs from different angles along with any certificate or invoice you have.

If you know your ring size, send that as well.

Most importantly, tell us your approximate budget and when you need the jewellery.

You do not need to have all the answers. We can work through the rest together.

These questions help us understand not just what you want the jewellery to look like, but how you want it to fit into your life.

What If You Only Have a Rough Idea?

That is often how the process starts.

You might know that you want a large emerald ring but have no idea what the setting should look like.

You might know that you want an anniversary necklace but have not decided on the design.

You might have seen a style you like but want something more understated.

You might simply know that you want something that nobody else has.

You can discuss all of this with Andy.

We can explore different possibilities, discuss the practical considerations and develop the idea from there.

You are not expected to arrive with a finished jewellery design.

How Much Does Custom Jewellery Cost?

There is no standard price for custom jewellery because every piece is different.

The final cost depends on the metal, weight, gemstones or diamonds, their specifications, the complexity of the design, the amount of craftsmanship involved and any additional requirements such as certification.

We will discuss the expected cost before manufacturing begins.

If you have a particular budget, tell us.

It allows us to make informed decisions from the beginning rather than trying to reduce the cost after the design has already been developed.

Our experience in both gemstone sourcing and jewellery manufacturing also means we can help identify where your money is best spent.

Sometimes the most expensive option is not the one that makes the biggest difference to the finished piece.

How Long Will It Take?

The time required depends entirely on the jewellery being made.

A straightforward ring may take considerably less time than a complex necklace containing many gemstones and intricate handwork.

The availability of the stones, design revisions, manufacturing requirements, setting and finishing can all affect the timeline.

If you are working toward a wedding, anniversary, birthday or another important date, tell us when you first contact us.

We will assess the project and give you a realistic expected timeline before production begins.

Custom jewellery requires more than a good drawing.

He is a GIA Graduate Gemologist from New York, has grown up in the gemstone trade, has worked with diamonds and coloured gemstones internationally and has been involved in jewellery manufacturing from an early age.

Through his team at The Sterling Factory, the design and manufacturing process can be handled closely in Jaipur rather than being separated between multiple unrelated suppliers.

This gives us the ability to discuss a design from the perspective of both the gemstone and the finished jewellery.
