Jewellery Design, From Idea to Reality

I’m Komal Fatehpuriya, a jewellery designer and 3D Computer Aided Jewellery Design specialist from Jaipur.

I have spent more than 10 years working within the gems and jewellery industry, combining traditional jewellery knowledge with modern digital design and manufacturing techniques.

For me, jewellery design is not simply about creating a beautiful image on a screen. It is about understanding how a piece will actually be made, how a gemstone should sit, how the proportions will work, how the surface should be finished and, ultimately, how the jewellery will feel when it is worn.

That understanding comes from growing up in Jaipur, where jewellery and craftsmanship are part of everyday life, and from years of professional training and experience within the industry.

From Jaipur to the Digital Workshop

Growing up in Jaipur gave me an early connection with jewellery that goes beyond design.

I was surrounded by craftsmen, gemstones, metalwork and the detailed processes that turn an idea into a finished piece. Over time, I developed an instinct for how jewellery is constructed and how traditional craftsmanship can be translated into a precise digital model.

My professional training at the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery further developed this foundation, including specialised training in Surface Ornamentation.

Today, I bring these two sides together: the understanding of a maker and the precision of a digital designer.

3D Jewellery Design

My work focuses on transforming an idea into a technically accurate 3D model that can be taken into production.

Using Rhino3D and MatrixGold, I develop jewellery with careful attention to proportions, stone placement, settings, structure and manufacturability.

For more organic and sculptural work, I also work with ZBrush, which allows me to create forms, textures and details that require a more artistic approach.

The goal is not simply to create something that looks impressive as a 3D model. The model needs to become good jewellery.

That means thinking about the finished piece from the beginning, including metal weight, stone setting, casting, finishing, wearability and the practical realities of manufacturing.

Surface Ornamentation

One of my areas of specialisation is surface ornamentation, where the smallest details can completely change the character of a piece.

Engraving, textures, decorative patterns and other surface treatments are often what give jewellery its individuality. My training allows me to approach these details with both an artistic and technical understanding.

I am also professionally trained in the French enamel technique of plique-Ć -jour, a highly specialised form of enamelwork known for its delicate, translucent appearance.

It is a technique that demands patience, precision and a strong understanding of how materials behave. For me, this traditional craft sits naturally alongside digital design because both require the same attention to detail.

Designing With Manufacturing in Mind

One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced jewellery designer is understanding what happens after the design is finished.

A beautiful CAD model is only the beginning.

Before a piece goes into production, I consider details such as stone tolerances, setting requirements, structural strength, casting considerations, proportions and finishing.

This manufacturing-first approach helps reduce unnecessary revisions, material waste and technical problems later in the process.

It also means that when a client has an ambitious idea, I can look at it not only as a designer, but as someone who understands how that idea needs to be constructed in the real world.

My Design Process

Every project begins with an idea.

It may be a detailed drawing, a photograph, a collection of references or simply a conversation about the kind of jewellery you want to create.

From there, I work through the proportions, materials, gemstones, details and construction before developing the design in 3D.

The digital model allows us to examine the jewellery from different angles and refine the details before anything is manufactured.

Once the design is approved, photorealistic renders can be created to give a clear representation of the finished piece.

Only then does the design move into production.

This process gives both the designer and the client much greater control over the final result.

Where Art Meets Precision

What I enjoy most about jewellery design is that it sits between two very different worlds.

There is the precision of CAD, where measurements, proportions and geometry have to be right.

And there is the artistic side, where a curve, texture, gemstone arrangement or small decorative detail can completely change how a piece feels.

My work is about bringing these two together.

Technology provides the precision. Craft provides the character.

My role is to make sure neither is lost in the process.

Working With Designers, Jewellers and Clients

I work with jewellery businesses, manufacturers, designers and private clients who need their ideas translated into accurate, production-ready 3D jewellery designs.

Whether the starting point is a hand-drawn sketch, an existing piece, a reference image or an entirely new concept, I can help develop it into a detailed digital model suitable for manufacturing.

For clients who already have their own jeweller or manufacturer, the CAD files can be prepared for their production process.

For those who need help taking the design further, I can also work alongside the manufacturing team to help ensure that the final piece remains faithful to the approved design.

More Than a CAD File

I believe good jewellery design should not stop at the computer.

The finished piece should have the right proportions, the right details and the right relationship between the gemstone, metal and wearer.

My experience in the gems and jewellery industry, combined with professional training in 3D CAD, surface ornamentation and plique-Ć -jour enamel, allows me to approach each project from several perspectives.

Design. Gemstones. Craftsmanship. Technology. Manufacturing.

All of them have to work together.

That is what turns a digital model into jewellery that can actually be made, worn and kept.
